Progetto Energetic Research
Tecnologia per l’energia e l’efficienza energetica
The ENERGETIC project deals with photovoltaic plant and energy efficiency issues through a broad approach, and aspects concerning materials, devices and ICT.
The Project focuses on four spheres of application:
- PV technologies. This part focuses with a clear long -term vision on new materials and devices, bearing in mind that this sector is rapidly expanding and therefore requires this type of activity.
- New processes and architectures for power Transistors, used pervasively in applications in which energy efficiency is crucial (the industrial sector, electric engines, hybrid and electric vehicles, lighting, power supply devices, converters etc.). Mid-short-term vision with long-term preparatory elements.
- Energy efficiency hardware systems. In particular it deals with technologies for wireless detectors networks powered by new generation photovoltaic modules, of great interest for domotics, and important issues for the PV system generation for domestic use. Mid-short-term vision with long-term preparatory elements.
- Software infrastructures supporting energy efficiency on a home, building and campus scale. Mid-short-term vision with long-term preparatory elements.
Although solar energy has the highest potential in terms of productive capacity, because of its high costs, photovoltaic energy is the least exploited among renewable energy sources.
The significant reduction of costs is not possible for economy of scale, but it requires significant innovations and the introduction of new materials and devices. In ENERGETIC the sectors which have been analysed are the most promising, focused on low-cost thin-film technologies, and aiming at elements which are easily available and not at all polluting, analysing sectors such as plasmonics and optical trapping to increase PV cells efficiency.
All the activities of theme 1 will lead to prototypes of third generation thin-film PV mini-modules on flexible support with advantageous efficiency potentials and easily applicable thanks to the use of flexible substrates.
As for theme 2, the activity will lead to three different transistor prototypes, low-voltage Multi-Drain technology and IGBT with radical design and technology innovations which will guarantee significant advantages in terms of costs and performance, and a high-voltage brakdown diode in SiC.
In theme 3 a sensor system demonstrator will be implemented for environmental control measures with wireless digital communication, totally powered by a mini photovoltaic module implemented in the theme 1 sector.
The study and development of a low-consumption platform and high energy efficeincy will be dealt with which, as far as the system is concerned, will include the sensor part, efficient energy management and the monitoriting and interfacing components through wireless sensor network communication.
The other aim of theme 3 concerns low-power photovoltaic implants (1-5 kW). The goal is to develop new circuit technologies, new management strategies and new monitoring sensors which are also able to forecast production figures.
As for theme 4 the Project focuses on Energy Management methods and Energy Consumption Awareness on a basis of individual homes, building or campus, aiming at a rational use of energy sources and cost reduction.
