The training Project called “Training for specialists in projecting and realizing solar cells and conversion implants and high-efficiency energy distribution” coordinated by Catania University, dealt with the technical-scientific training of 22 technologists with transversal competences in the Physics, Chemistry and Engineering sector, able to manage industrial activities in the alternative energy sector for a rapid entry into employment. Three different programmes were designed to train professionals with different competences in conformity with activities developed in the research project: • Specialists in innovative materials and technologies to create solar cells and their characterisation. Eminent professionals: specialists in materials and processes with elevated scientific competences aiming at the use of innovative technologies. • Specialists in circuits, systems and networks for high-efficiency photovoltaic systems. Specialists in electrical and electronic issues conncted both with the functioning of a photovoltaic implant and circuits and control systems for photovoltaic cells and panels. • Specialists in knowledge transfer processes and development of scientific research in the alternative energy sector. Specialists with managerial competences in developing finalcial resources for research, also by creating spin-off enterprises, in coordinating technological transfer processes and in managing innovation and intellectual property. Each programme, which lasts 21 months, alternates theory and practice and is divided into three modules: further knowledge of specialistic skills, internships shadowing staff dealing with industrial research and/or experimental development, programming, strategical, assessment and operative organization training of research projects. Participants were carefully recruited among over 100 candidates (maximum age 31) with a degree in Engineering, Physics or Chemistry mostly coming from Sicily and Calabria. A high number of candidates had attended post-graduate training activities like masters and PhDs. Lectures were held by teachers with proven experience in research on these issues from the Universities, enterprises and research bodies involved in the project, but also from abroad. Students took part assiduously and participated actively in the activities they were proposed. The internship also gave the students the chance to carry out both academic and industrial research with instant feedback of the themes dealt with during lectures. The project ended in July when all the students presented the results achieved during the internship in a public closing ceremony. On that occasion the examining board of each programme assessed the degree of professionalism achieved by each student through the discussion of a final dissertation. The final aim of the training programme was to qualify technologically those professionals essential to the competitive growth of the regional industrial base in the competitive sector and the rapidly-growing photovoltaic sector. Some trainees were hired by those enterprises where they interned.
